Clinical trials are medical research studies to test new ways to prevent, detect, or treat diseases. Clinical trials use volunteers, who agree to participate in these types of studies. Clinical trials offer hope for many people and provide an opportunity to help researchers find new or improve existing treatments.

How do clinical trials work?

After researchers thoroughly test new treatments or vaccines in the lab to make sure they may benefit people, the most promising treatments move into clinical trials. Clinical trials are medical research studies with volunteers to determine if a new treatment or vaccine works and is safe for people to use.

People participate in clinical trials for a variety of reasons. Healthy volunteers often say they participate to help others and to contribute to moving science forward. People with an illness or disease may participate to help others, but also participate to receive or help create new treatment options for their condition.

People who would like to volunteer for a clinical trial go through a process called “informed consent.” Informed consent provides you with key information about a research study before you decide whether to take part. Clinical trials follow specific ethical guidelines, policies, and regulations. Trials are usually monitored by an outside board to ensure patients’ safety.
